Where is your dojo?

  • The dojo currently holds class at two locations: Honolulu Myohoji Mission and the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai’i.

Do you do term contracts?

  • Nope! Payments are made on a month-to-month basis based on the number of times a week a student wants to train. We have a waiver to fill out as part of sign-up to keep our insurance company happy, but we strongly believe in becoming the dojo people WANT to stay at, and not the dojo people HAVE to stay at. If you or your family need to stop training at any time, let us know and we can help you.

I'm interested in joining but it’s not the beginning of the month, is that OK?

  • Absolutely! What we do is charge on a calendar date basis. Month-to-month payments are charged on the calendar date that you signed up every month, and when the payment was initially made between the 29th and the 31st, the payment is billed for the latest day possible in that particular month.

Do you charge money for belt tests?

  • No. We don’t charge money for belt tests because we consider testing and assessment to be part of the instruction provided. We also don’t tie a financial incentive to the test so that we can protect the integrity of the assessment process itself.

What should we bring to a trial class?

  • Karate sometimes requires movements that require flexibility, so we recommend clothing that is easy to move in, as well as water.

Are we allowed to observe a class?

  • We encourage everyone to participate at the level of their comfort. Class observations are always welcome! Contact us beforehand on our contact page.

Does your dojo do sparring?

  • As is common in all Kyokushin dojo, kumite, or sparring, is a core requirement of our style, and our instructor has had a foundation in tournament fighting. That being said, while we seek to develop a core competency in sparring, no one is pushed beyond their level and injury prevention is a critical element to proper kumite instruction at our dojo.

What equipment is needed to do karate?

  • We offer free uniforms to everyone who registers as a student, but you will want sparring gear so as to participate in partner drills. If you are just getting started, we can loan you sparring gear until you are able to procure your own. For children, leg supporters, gloves, and helmets are required. For adults, leg supporters and gloves are required, and helmets are optional. Both children and adults may elect to wear a mouth guard or cup for sparring as desired. Dogi are required for indoor lessons for students, but athletic wear is OK for outside classes.
